Consider Your Needs. Ask yourself what do you need in furniture for the dining area? The need determines the size and function of the furniture you'll get. A wine cabinet for example could be purchased by because one needs a large storage for wines in the house. The size of table you'll get is determined by the number of people who would use it. Big families would need a larger table to accommodate many people while smaller ones and maybe bachelors would need smaller ones. Function is also a consideration. Bachelors and smaller families may consider getting a dining table that have foldable extensions that may be put away if not in use just in case there might be surprise visitors.
The place where everybody in the house gathers for good food and conversation is the dining area. Everyone convenes and enjoys pleasantries exchanged over food and beverage. The function of the room is of course obviously in line with the functions of the furniture in it. As the dining room is used for eating its flagship furniture that garners the most attention and usage is the dining room table. Other dining room furniture work in coordination with the dining room table and together they create the functionality and good atmosphere of the dining room.
Consider Shape. You have several shapes from which to choose. The two most common shapes are rectangular and circular. Some people prefer a circle shape believing that this shape facilitates better conversation. It's easier to fit more people around the table with a rectangular shape. If you add leaves to a circular table it will become an oval. An octagonal table is another option.
